Student Guide to the Pathways Process: Choosing your GCSEs

Why Your GCSE Pathway Choices Matter

Choosing your GCSE subjects is one of the first important steps in shaping your future. The subjects you select now will influence:

  • The courses you can study after Year 11
  • The careers and training routes available to you in the future
  • The knowledge and skills you will develop over the next two years

Experience shows that students do best when they play to their strengths and make informed decisions that balance interest, ability, and ambition. GCSE choices also affect your Progress 8 score — a measure used to show the progress you make from Year 7 to Year 11, based on challenging but achievable target grades.

GCSE subjects taken now can open doors later, but they can also limit your options if you do not choose carefully. This is why it is vital to think ahead, attend Options Evening, talk to your teachers, and choose thoughtfully.

Your Core Subjects

All students take the following GCSEs:

  • English Language
  • English Literature
  • Mathematics
  • Combined Science (or Triple Science, if chosen as an option)

You will also have non‑exam Core PE, and Personal Development which is delivered during Form Time and Focus Days.

In addition to the above, all students at Shireland CBSO Academy are expected to study a music qualification.

Your Pathway Choices

You must choose three subjects — one from each option block.

The Pathways form will ask you to identify your first, second and third choice in each block. Our aim is to provide as many students as possible with their first choice. Therefore, we reserve the right to make changes to option blocks after selections are made to maximise this.

All students must choose one Music subject (highlighted blue). This can be:

  • GCSE Music
  • BTEC Music Practice
  • VCert Music Technology

Your chosen Music subject must come from one of the three option blocks.

Subjects highlighted gold are not compulsory, but they are highly recommended because they:

  • Support a broad and academically balanced curriculum
  • Are valued by Sixth Forms, colleges, universities, and future employers
  • Help keep future pathways open, especially if you are unsure about your long‑term plans

Gold subjects include:

  • History
  • Geography
  • French
  • Triple Science
  • Computer Science

These subjects form part of the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) suite, which is shown to broaden opportunities for students in later education and careers.

Community Languages

If you speak another language at home — for example Polish, Punjabi, Urdu, Arabic, Somali, Italian, or Romanian — you may be able to take a GCSE in that language.

Studying a community language:

  • Recognises and celebrates your cultural identity and multilingualism
  • Allows you to gain an additional GCSE in a subject you already have strong knowledge of
  • Strengthens your academic profile and helps future applications post‑16

If you can take a community language, you should seriously consider it. It is a brilliant opportunity and gives you a real advantage.

Important:
If you commit to taking a community language, you will be expected to sit the final exam. If a student later withdraws, families will be asked to pay the exam entry fee.

ASDAN (Selected Students Only)

ASDAN is available only for specific students who would benefit from this route.

Families of students being considered for ASDAN will be contacted before Options Evening by a member of the Inclusion Team.

Possible Opportunity for a 9th GCSE (Subject to Interest)

The Academy is considering offering students the chance to study a 9th GCSE:

  • GCSE French or
  • GCSE Dance

These additional lessons would take place after school.

If you are interested, there will be a section on the Pathways Form (released after Options Evening) where you can indicate this. Please note that this opportunity will only run if enough students express interest.

How to Make the Best Choices

When choosing your subjects:

  1. Play to your strengths – choose subjects where you work well, enjoy the content, or achieve highly.
  2. Think about the future – some subjects may be needed for Sixth Form, apprenticeships, or university courses.
  3. Balance ambition with realism – challenge yourself but choose what you can commit to for two years.
  4. Seek advice – talk to your teachers, family, and subject staff at Options Evening.
  5. Use the SCBSO website and subject pages – these explain assessment, course content, and what GCSEs can lead to.
