Shireland CBSO sixth form students explore Oxbridge pathways with the University of Cambridge

Students from Shireland CBSO Academy joined peers from across Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust for an Oxbridge outreach event hosted at Shireland Collegiate Academy, featuring representatives from the University of Cambridge.

The session formed part of a national outreach programme designed to encourage students to consider applications to leading universities.

Founded in 1209, the University of Cambridge is one of the world’s most prestigious universities, with a global reputation for academic excellence and research. It comprises 31 colleges, which act as a student’s home base throughout their degree, providing both academic guidance and pastoral support.

Delivered by representatives from Girton College, the event also brought together students from West Bromwich Collegiate Academy, Shireland Biomedical UTC and Shireland Collegiate Academy.

Students explored Oxbridge pathways and the realities of applying for highly competitive places at university. They were introduced to the range of opportunities available and the level of academic commitment required for success.

The sessions also emphasised the importance of developing academic curiosity, creativity and the ability to question ideas, think independently and adapt to new ways of learning, qualities valued by universities like Oxford and Cambridge.

David Green, Principal at Shireland CBSO Academy said: “Our students thrive when they are given access to experiences that challenge their thinking and expand their horizons and aspirations. This visit provided a valuable opportunity to see what’s required to succeed at the highest level and to understand that those pathways are open with commitment and the right support.”

Oxbridge Pathways is an external programme delivered by Oxbridge Applications, a specialist organisation that supports students considering applications to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

The programme is designed for students aged 14 to 16 who are beginning to explore competitive university routes. It focuses on developing the skills and understanding needed for Oxbridge applications over time, rather than through short-term preparation.

Through structured guidance, students are supported to build subject knowledge, independent thinking and academic confidence, helping them to better understand the expectations of highly selective university courses and make more informed decisions about their future study pathways.

The visit formed part of the Academy’s wider work to demystify the Oxbridge application process and encourage more young people to consider applying to world-leading universities. It also followed a strong period of achievement, during which four sixth form students from the Trust secured interviews with the University of Oxford, with one going on to receive an offer.

Applications for year 12 entry in September 2026 are now open via Applicaa, the Academy’s online admissions system. Further details about Shireland CBSO Sixth Form and how to apply are available on the Academy website.
