L4L – Physical Education

The curriculum for Key Stage 3 has been developed to provide students with the opportunity to build on and embed the physical development and skills learned in Key Stages 1 and 2. Our curriculum supports and teaches students to become more competent, confident, and expert in their techniques whilst applying them across different sports and physical activities.

Throughout the course of this key stage, students will understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work. The aim in this key stage is to develop students’ confidence and interest to get involved in exercise both inside and outside of school, whilst providing students with an understanding of how to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.

Emphasis will be placed upon three principal ambitions of wellbeing, physical competence and building character. We plan a high-quality physical education curriculum which aims to inspire and engage all pupils. Motivating students to do their best and not be afraid of making mistakes supports the development of their characters. Promoting an ethos where students enjoy lessons, experience success and cultivate positive self-esteem is a key part of promoting health and wellbeing. This is developed through a broad range of physical activity settings including competitive sport. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as teamwork, fairness, respect and resilience.

Key Stage 3 curriculum

In line with the National Curriculum, our aim is to provide students with the opportunity to experience a number of different sports.

Throughout Key Stage 3 all students will receive two hours a week of Physical Education where they will cover one new sport each half term. This gives our students access to experience a variety of sports and activities and supports our philosophy of providing sport for all.

Our wider-curricular programme then allows students to develop their sport further with the chance to represent the Academy.
